Federated Press Publications Inc. (Federated Press) is a company that publishes journals and produces courses and conferences. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy outlines how we handle your personal information to protect your privacy.
Privacy Legislation
Since January 1, 2004, all Canadian organizations engaged in commercial activities have been required to comply with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (“PIPEDA”) and the Canadian Standards Association Model Code for the Protection of Personal Information incorporated by reference into PIPEDA.
In addition, an Act respecting the Protection of Personal Information in the Private Sector has been in force in Quebec since 1994 and sets out rules regarding the collection, use and disclosure of personal information within that province.
Personal Information
Personal information is defined in PIPEDA as information about an identifiable individual, but does not include the name, title or business address or telephone number of an employee of an organization. In other words, it does not include the information that one expects to find on a business card. Federated Press does not to its knowledge gather or collect such personal information about clients or potential clients, as explained further below.
Consent to Our Collection of Personal Information
In most cases, we obtain your consent to collect, use and disclose your business contact information. Usually, if you subscribe to one of our journals or attend one of our events or view one of our electronic products, we assume that we have your implied consent to our collection and use of such information. However, at times we may ask for your express consent, either verbally or in writing. Generally, we collect only your business contact information directly from you when you subscribe to one of our publications or register for an event. Sometimes we may obtain information about you from other sources such as a public registry or a professional listing, but we try to restrict data of this sort to business contact information.
Use of Information at Federated Press
We use your business contact information to service our products, to issue invoices and to maintain our database of clients. We may use your business contact information (name, title, e-mail, telephone, and postal address) so that we may communicate with you about our new or existing products. We do not knowingly use an email address that is not part of a business or government domain or that of an organization.
Withdrawal of Consent
You may withdraw your consent to our collection, use and disclosure of your information at any time, subject to upon reasonable notice. Your withdrawal of consent to our collection, use and disclosure of your information may of course impact our ability to offer or maintain our services to you.

Disclosure of Information
Generally, we do not disclose your information to third parties without your consent. We do not make our lists available to third parties. We do not record telephone conversations but these may be monitored for quality control. Your response to a survey is not disclosed to third parties but your comments may be published if you have specifically agreed in writing. Generally any information we possess may be shared with our third party service providers we hire as freelance or on some other basis.
Accuracy of Your Information
It is important that the information that we have on file be accurate and up-to-date. If any of your information changes, please inform us so that we can make any necessary modification. We may also ask you from time to time whether your information is up-to-date.
Safeguards
Federated Press uses various safeguards to ensure that your information is protected against loss, theft, misuse, unauthorized access, disclosure, copying or alteration. These include: security of our physical premises; security software and firewalls to prevent unauthorized computer access or "hacking"; and internal passwords that restrict access to our electronic files. We do not keep a record of any credit card after payment has been made and we use a banking service to process cards online. Your information is generally maintained at our head office but it may also reside on servers which may be located in or out of Canada.
Access to your Contact Information
You have a right to challenge the accuracy and completeness of your information and to have it amended, as appropriate. You also have a right to request access to your information and receive an accounting of how that information has been used and disclosed, subject to certain exceptions prescribed by law. As aforementioned, to our knowledge, our databases are restricted to business contact information and information about past participation as a subscriber, attendee, sponsor, speaker or in some other capacity. For past or potential authors and speakers information may include published professional information such as that available on the Web about someone’s qualifications.

Challenging Compliance
Federated Press will respond to inquiries about its policies and practices relating to its handling of your personal information. Inquiries should be directed to the aforementioned Privacy Officer using the contact information above. Federated Press will investigate all complaints and will respond within 30 days of receipt of a written inquiry. If the complaint is found to be justified, Federated Press will take appropriate measures to resolve it, including, if necessary, amending this Policy and its procedures.
Website Privacy
Like most other commercial websites, we may monitor traffic patterns, site usage and related site information to optimize your visit to our websites, including via any electronic communication. We may use cookies or similar technology for this purpose. The information is restricted to your view of our sites and pages or files thereon. We do not trace in any way your browsing history except as it pertains to our sites.
Our website server will automatically collect IP addresses. We may view the IP log from time to time, for example, to maintain the security of our website.
We may place advertising on third party sites which may follow a different policy regarding cookies and electronic tracing. We assume no responsibility for such sites, nor for sites to which we may be linked from our own site for any reason.
